Advice: Raising teens in today's world

It's tough work. So we asked experts for advice.

By Dennis McCafferty

Are there reasons to feel optimistic about today's teens? Absolutely!

Being the parent of a teenager today can seem more fraught than ever. From peer pressure and even bullying on social networking sites, to fears that kids have grown up way too fast, what's a parent to do?

For advice on navigating this ever-complex world, we turned to Sean Covey, 44, author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" (and son of Stephen R. Covey, the best-selling author as well as a USA WEEKEND contributing editor), and Jason Ryan Dorsey, 30, author of "My Reality Check Bounced!: The Gen-Y Guide to Cashing In on Your Real-World Dreams." Both authors are in high demand as speakers on the guidance of teens, and you may be surprised by their underlying message: The kids are going to be all right. Really. To learn more, read on.

What's the worst thing you ever did as a teen?
Covey: I threw a lot of things as a teenager -- like eggs at cars and houses. I tossed a lot of crab apples in school, too, which resulted in my spending a lot of time in the principal's office. I feel badly about it now.
Dorsey: When my parents went out of town one weekend, I took my stepfather's car out to go cruising. I was only 14. At one point, I almost ran into a police cruiser!

That story brings up this point: How uptight should parents be about the occasional trouble their kids get into?
Dorsey: It's a fine line. If you overreact to the little things, it's going to de-emphasize your effectiveness when something serious happens. More important, it can make it harder for the child to open up about those serious things.
Covey: Right -- parents can overreact. But keep in mind that this is a different world now. If any of my eight kids got caught doing some of the things I did, they'd get kicked out of school. There's much less tolerance now.
Dorsey: And I'm also seeing less willingness on the part of parents to make their kids accept responsibility, which is troubling. It used to be that when you got sent to the principal's office, the school called your parents and you took your punishment. Now, kids text their parents and plead with them to come defend them. Sometimes the parents bring a lawyer! Moms and dads need to allow their kids to go through the appropriate disciplinary steps because if boundaries are not enforced, then teens will keep pushing those boundaries further out.

How has the media created a unique challenge for today's parents when it comes to raising teens?
Covey: Kids spend far too much time in front of a computer or TV screen. This isn't acceptable in our household. So I schedule "dates" at least once a month with each of my eight kids. One daughter wants to go hiking. Another wants to go to a play. It's a time when we have personal, private time together, and it's vital.
Dorsey: You need to make time together a part of the routine, even if it just means having Saturday morning breakfast together every week.

But parents still will have social networking sites to deal with. How much of this should they allow?
Covey: We've allowed some of that for a while because it represents a connection with friends. But we took a look at what was going on with MySpace, and it made us feel uncomfortable. We told our kids that they're well connected as is with cellphones and texting, and they don't need this.
Dorsey: There are positive values of social networking sites. It gives teens a sense of inclusion. My sister is 17, and she stays in touch with friends from camp, thanks to these sites. When teens go from high school to college, the sites help them transition; they stay in touch with their old friends while trying to adjust to new circumstances.

Is there reason to feel optimistic about today's teens?
Dorsey: Absolutely! I'm moved by their optimism -- even ones from tough situations. Today's teens are more accepting of other religions and backgrounds, and they are greater risk-takers. They think nothing of, for example, starting their own businesses.
Covey: There are lots of reasons to be optimistic. Teens are living in the most exciting time ever. There's more global wealth and more freedom to do things, thanks to the power of technology. I see so many good kids coming out of both good homes and struggling homes. These kids really "get" maintaining high values and being true to themselves.

Sean Covey's First Visit to Manila

by: G. "We can't afford to have a casual attitude and think, 'Oh, kids will be kids,'" says Covey, the nation's most trusted advisor to teenagers. "Teens are facing huge, challenging decisions. In talking with teens I saw that a frightening number of these kids were making decisions that were going to mess them up for life." According to Covey, the six key decisions that face every teenager and makes or breaks the future revolve around these topics:

School Making the right choice about your education will either open doors of opportunity or slam them shut.

Friends Choosing who you hang out with determines a powerful influence in your life.

Parents Deciding what kind of relationship you have with them sets the stage for key relationships in your life.

Dating and Sex Making informed decisions.

Addictions Dealing with pressure and temptations and learning the realities of addiction.

Self-Worth Learning that self-worth involves much more than beauty and bulging biceps.

"Smart people learn from their own mistakes, while really smart people learn from the mistakes of the others," says Covey. "Some of these decisions you don't recover from or they are very hard to reverse. Most of the time kids aren't even aware that they are making fork-in-the-road decisions that will take them thousands of miles off path. All because of one little switch they could have made at age 16."

   ABOUT SEAN COVEY:

Sean Covey is the bestselling author of the wildly popular The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, which has sold more than three million copies and has been translated into 16 languages in 120 countries worldwide. Habits 1, 2, and 3 deal with self-mastery called the "Private Victory®." Habits 4, 5, and 6 deal with relationships and teamwork, or the "Public Victory®." The last habit, Habit 7, is the habit of renewal. It feeds all of the other six habits. The training provides students with a step-by-step framework for boosting self-image, building friendships, resisting peer pressure, achieving goals, improving communication and relationships with parents, and much more. The habits build upon each other and foster behavioral change and improvement from the inside out.

Habit 1: Be Proactive®
Take responsibility for your life.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind®
Define your mission and goals in life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First®
Prioritize and do the most important things first.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win®
Have an "everyone-can-win" attitude.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood®
Listen to people sincerely.

Habit 6: Synergize®
Work together to achieve more.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw®
Renew yourself regularly.

What Impact Does the Workshop Have on Teens and Students?

The 7 Habits have a profound effect on students' attitudes and belief about themselves and others in a relatively short amount of time. Although the results of exposure to such powerful principles cannot be fully measured over the span of an entire lifetime, one school was able to track the attitudes during the course of a regular semester term.

The self-concept students had made the most dramatic improvement of all the survey items. Increased perception of personal self-control over one's life and one's choices is one of the keys to personal health and well-being.

The next highest increase occurred in students' willingness and openness to work with others on projects. Collaboration and interdependence are skills highly sought after in today's workplace.

At the end of a semester's study of the 7 Habits, Joliet Township High School asked a few more questions of their students. Santos<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

CONSUMER spending among teens has shifted to technology-driven products and less toward traditional consumer goods, a market research company said.

Spending for cold beverages like beer and soft drinks, books, movies and clothes has declined the last five years, according to a McCann Erickson Intergeneration survey done in 2005.

The study found that in their place, spending for prepaid cell-phone cards and web surfing has spiked since the last study the company did in 2000. People under 21 currently comprise 51 percent of the country’s population, with its median age at 22.5 years old.

The study covered 2000 respondents across all economic classes and geographical regions, with ages ranging from 21 to 60.

McCann Erickson said the growing dependence of today’s youth on technology-driven inputs poses a distinct challenge to companies that want to corner a piece of the burgeoning teen market, as wants and needs have also increased over the past five years.

Teens also watch less television and instead focus more on online chatting and texting. They also read less books, magazines and newspapers compared to 2000 numbers, the study said.

The proliferation of Internet cafés has also democratized Internet access as respondents from the C and D demographic reflected the highest jump in terms of Internet gaming and surfing usage across all clusters.

The study also cited the youth’s shift to careers that offer instant gratification instead of traditional career-building jobs, a theory which explains the rise in contact-center employment which offers high salaries but limited career opportunities.

The survey also concluded that today’s youth tend to focus more hours on studying compared to five years ago, but added that this trend was not meant for scholastic or academic achievement but geared toward accelerating their ascent to high-paying jobs abroad like nursing.

People wanting to become nurses topped all classes: A-18 percent, C- 28 percent and D-25 percent, McCann Erickson said.

McCann said the exodus of Filipinos overseas has inspired today’s younger generation to seek employment abroad, and often times, these individuals go as singles, reversing earlier trends of married overseas Filipino workers. Today’s youth also seek jobs abroad to support their parents and next of kin, and to uplift their social status.

The side effect of more information disseminated through technology is that teens are more stressed out than they were a decade ago, McCann said. Playing computer or video games increased to 38% in 2005 from 17% in 2000; Email, surfing, chatting on the Net rose to 27% in 2005 from 13% in 2000. On the youth’s value systems, the 2006 study yielded disturbing results particularly on moral standards. Critics say some factors for the plunging moral standards of the young may be readily blamed, among others, to the influence of media, teens deprived of parental supervision due to labor migration, and their techno-centric life. The influence of media as reason for youth’s eroding moral standards was already proven by McCann-Erickson’s 2000 study when it found that the media are considered by the youth as an authority on “what is right, wrong and important.” (CBCP MONITOR)

The youth defined

Philippine Business Magazine: Volume 8 No. 5 - Agenda
The Youth Defined

The youth of today are more sociable

A recent survey commissioned by McCann Erickson Philippines about the Filipino youth reveals very interesting results. Among other things, the study concludes that the youth in an environment that is extremely different from that of the previous generation. This environment has enabled them to be more sociable and interactive, even evidenced by the findings that majority consider the school as a venue to socialize, not mainly to listen to teachers. Disparities in income levels do not prevent those from the lower strata to find ways to access the information otherwise available to the rich ones. But in this highly-interactive world, the youth considers that money is still the biggest single factor that has a bearing on the level of satisfaction they would have on their lives.

McCann-Erickson partnered with GMA-7 for this study and commissioned the services of Trends-MBL in doing the market research. Actual survey took place in mid-November to early December 2000. Unlike the previous McCann Youth Study of 1992 which was conducted only in Metro Manila, this was a nationwide survey, covering urban areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. A statistically projectible sample of 900 respondents aged 13 to 21 years old from class ABCD homes were interviewed for the study. All were chosen randomly using multi-stage probability sampling methods.

The questionnaire used was similar to that of the 1992 McCann Youth Study and attempted to cover broad topics such as values, morals, attitudes, and practices. Philippine Business, however, highlights the technology bias and spending patterns of this totally-important market that is the youth.

New Social Environment
The youth of today live in an environment that is very different from the one the previous generation experienced. In the past 10 years, infrastructure has developed so rapidly, giving the youth today access to activities the previous generation could only envy (or even fathom). About a decade ago, for instance, SM North Edsa was the only major mall. Now, malls are everywhere, in various key cities around the country.

Telephones are also more accessible now. While land line penetration rates are not yet at saturation levels (23% of homes nationwide; 64% in Metro Manila), ownership of telephones has jumped significantly since the liberalization of the telecommunications industry during the Ramos administration. Cellular phones were also virtually unheard of among the previous generation.

Computer games, the internet, and the proliferation of mass media are also making a profound impact on the lifestyle and psyche of today’s youth.

Interactive Generation
Today’s generation are even more social and connectivity-driven than those who came before them. With the kind of physical and social environment they now live in, they feel a much stronger need to be stimulated by the world around them.

This is evident in the kinds of activities that they do during their free time. While traditional activities like watching TV (88% of respondents), listening to the radio (73%), reading books (50%), and doing household chores (40%) are still the most prevalent, it is also noteworthy that using technology toys and gadgets such as cell phones (12%) and the internet to connect with other people and the outside world (37%) are already starting to encroach on the youth’s lifestyle.

Also, there are indications that even the youth’s slew of ‘traditional’ activities is becoming more skewed towards social interaction and connectivity. In Metro Manila, activities like eating out (58% in 2000 vs. 38% in 1992), playing billiards (29% vs. 12%), going to the mall (14% vs. 7%), talking on the phone (31% vs. 15%), and going to a friend’s house (36% vs. 21%) are more popular now than in 1992.
Post-school activites that involve interaction or socializing with others and the outside world are much more popular among this generation of youth.

Leveling the Field in Technology
Technology usage today is not anymore only for the affluent.
Access to the virtual / digital world is now within reach for many – even those from class CD homes. Only 13% and 1% of the class C and D markets, respectively, have computers that are hooked up to the internet at home (vs. 62% for Class AB). Still, this does not stop them from accessing the virtual world. Internet cafes have enabled them to make contact with cyber-space for only a few pesos every hour. This is especially true for youth in the Visayas where internet cafes can be seen in almost every major district.

This study also substantiated the incidence of texting going on among the youth. Even for the class CDs and those outside Metro Manila, levels are direc-tionally higher than traditional chatting via the landline.

Learning, Redefined
The increased emphasis that today’s youth place on connectivity and social interaction has impacted on their attitudes towards school.

The youth generally enjoy going to school. About three-fourths would say that they like school “very much.” However, what they really like most in school are not so much the teacher’s lectures (23%). Instead, they go to school mainly to take part in activities that involve interaction with their friends and classmates (33%) such as doing group projects, joining sports activities and so on.

In fact, students in Metro Manila are not studying as much as before. The proportion who said they study after school has dropped (42% in 2000 vs. 55% in 1992) and so has the amount of time that they spend doing so (119 minutes in 2000 vs. 132 minutes in 1992). Incidence of accomplishing schoolwork has also declined significantly. There are just more things — the mall, fast food chains, text messaging, internet cafes, cable TV — competing for the attention of the youth today.

Clearly, the youth may no longer respond well to traditional methods of learning. This implies that new teaching approaches are necessary.

Money Rules
Money remains to be an important item for the youth. When asked what the most pressing problem of the country is, financial-related issues are the ones that surfaced first and foremost.

Those from class AB homes are generally more satisfied with their way of life than those in the lower class. But the difference is not so great considering disparity in income — indicating that the lower classes have learned to cope somehow.

For the lower classes, overall satisfaction with their way of life is being pulled down by their lower perception of their standard of living, health, and living conditions. Even their family life is not deemed as vibrant as that of the upper class.

Despite gaps between the different income groups on overall satisfaction with way of life, there is an important point of convergence. The youth in general are equally satisfied with their school life. For the lower classes, their school life is a very significant source of emotional well-being. While they are not as happy with their standard of living, family life, health, and physical surroundings, school provides them a venue to interact with friends and classmates. School also represents their hope for a brighter future through education, making it a ‘psychological equalizer.’

Rich in Ambitions
The youth want to land good jobs. Many want to be professionals — engineers, lawyers, CPAs (23%) or teachers (17%). Some also want to be part of the healthcare industry — doctor, nurse, physical therapist (11%). A good number would also like to join the police force, become entrepreneurs or seamen.

It is noteworthy that technology-related professions are already being considered by a good number of the youth. About 6% say they plan to join the I.T. industry as computer engineers, programmers, or systems analysts.

SWS Report on family and youth. Singapore 2006

THE MASSIVE migration of workers overseas and a ballooning population are weakening the Filipino family, which has remained among the poorest in the world, Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral said.

In a country report delivered during the Second East Asian Ministerial Forum on Families held in Singapore from Nov. 6 to 7, Cabral said that despite a functional literacy rate of 81.9 percent for men and 86.3 percent for women, 30 percent of the population are still poor.
Cabral said that while OFWs contributed much to the country’s economic gains, the increased number of parents now working abroad has resulted in prolonged separation of families. Worse, it has also led to a radical change in the family structure: the emergence of single-parents and female-headed households, and households headed by older children of OFWs. Cabral said that like other Asian cultures, mothers are perceived as the first teachers of Filipino children and play a crucial role in their formation and transition to adulthood.
“The tragedy is that while these women work for families abroad, millions of Filipino children grow up without their mothers,” Cabral lamented.

“With children comprising 43 percent of its 85 million people, the country’s young population needs not just financial but also psychological support and guidance from their parents.”

“The Philippines upholds the dignity of the family because we believe that investing in the Filipino family is investing in our country’s future.”

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kabataanpinoy.blogspot.com/2007/06/sws-report-on-family-and-youth.html' title='SWS Report on family and youth. This is the consensus of those present during the Harampang Ha PIA held in connection with the World Population Day held on July 11.

Education begins at home as early as when the child is in the womb of the mother. Whatever values the parents have will be imbibed by the baby. If the baby is loved then she will learn to love others. If she is respected, he will respect other people too.

When the child starts going to school, the teachers will immediately know what kind of learning she had at home. Her new environment, the teachers, the classmates, will again teach her new facets of character.

This is the reaction to the recommendations of the Young Adolescents Fertility and Sexuality Survey (YAFSS) which says that access to reproductive and family planning services must be given to the youth in order to prevent the high incidence of teenage pregnancies and unwanted pregnancies.

By doing so, is just like telling the youth that they are free to indulge in things which they are not yet ready to do and be accountable for them, most reactors opined. No medical practitioner or health service provider will give artificial contraceptives to the youth, other respondents reacted.

The best thing is to bring back the good family values of yesteryears, inculcate them on the youth and they will surely not go wrong. The youth in the past were not allowed to go out without a mature person to go with them. Nowadays, the youth are seen around without a chaperons.

The school, the family, the church alone cannot educate the youth the proper values because the environment especially the media is full of shows which are not yet appropriate to be seen by the youth, a media practitioner said.

It all goes back to the family, because the parents must be able to supervise the youth in the shows they are watching and the reading materials they are reading. They put great importance on marriage and family, friends, education, work, religion , society, and money, but not much importance on recreation, hobbies, or politics. They are very sensitive to how parents and children make personal sacrifices for each other. Not only are they personally religious, but they actively participate in religious organizations very regularly. They are generally satisfied with the government's performance in the areas of their own needs.

Comparative analysis with surveys of American youth indicates that Filipino youth have more self-confidence and more satisfaction with life. They get along better with parents and neighbors. They get together with friends less often, and yet are as satisfied with these relationships as Americans are. They are more content with their educational opportunities, their standard of living, and their jobs. Filipino youth get less exercise, however, and are less exposed to television and movies.

A comparison with surveys of adult Filipinos shows that the youth consider the economy as the country's most pressing problem area, but think that they themselves can do little about it. They smoke and drink less, regard their health as good, feel happier, and are more optimistic. Yet, at the same time, the 1996 survey found unexpectedly high incidences of youth involvement in criminality, illegal drug use, and illicit sex.

Philippine government statistics on the youth mostly pertain to their characteristics and do not include information regarding their attitudes, values, needs, aspirations, and problems. Also, the government data do not encompass the 15-30 age range specified to be the legal definition of the youth, resulting to gaps in available data on the youth.

The Social Weather Stations' survey of the youth in April 1996 was the first representative nationwide study in the Philippines targeted to obtain, aside from their characteristics, the youth's attitudes, values, needs, aspirations, and problems. The respondents of this survey are the newly-defined youth or those belonging to the 15-30 age bracket.

Among other things, the survey found that the youth feel very proud to be Filipinos and are willing to defend the country in case of war. To them, marriage and family, education, work, religion, friends, society and money are important, but not much importance is given to recreation, hobbies and politics. They are also very religious and perform religious activities like praying and attending religious services regularly, although they are only moderately involved in religious organizations. They are generally satisfied with government's performance, especially on areas of their own needs. They consider Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, as the male role model and mothers as the female role model for them. A few, however, want to change their present gender.

Compared to the American youth, the Filipino youth have more confidence and satisfaction with their life. They get along better with their parents and neighbors. Although they get together with friends less frequently, they are as satisfied with these relationships as the Americans are. They are more content with their educational experiences, their standard of living, their jobs, and their life in general. Filipino youth, however, get less exercise and are less exposed to television and movies. Furthermore, they read books, magazines or newspapers less regularly than the American youth do.

Comparing the surveys of average Filipino adults with the Filipino youth reveals that both consider their health as good, feel generally happy, and are very sensitive to how parents and children make personal sacrifices for each other. Both also consider the economy as the most pressing problem area in the country, but the youth think that they can do little about this. More youth feel less poor, consider their quality of life to improve over the past year and are more optimistic of the coming year than adults. They also smoke and drink less, although for both youth and adults, females do these less frequently than males.
